Kicking off the New Year!

I haven’t been posting much lately about my art practice and that’s mainly due to a busy last couple of months at my day job. This post will be short and simple, so that I can quickly share a few photos of some work that was wrapped up at the end of 2019.

October 2019 - Update

The month of October was spent adjusting back to real life with a full-time day job. I found I still had lots of motivation left over from the residency and I was able to get a solid amount of work done. I completed another cross-stitch in the Translation Series, a painting from the Paint by Numbers Series, added a couple rows to Stitching Loose Ends and submitted to several galleries for shows in the new year, as well as an artist residency in France.

I also started to work on an old photography project I started back in 2017 while I was finishing up my MFA in Winnipeg. The idea behind the project was to shoot roll of film with a list of pre-established camera-settings. Therefore, each frame had an assigned f-stop and shutter speed. This further expands my approach to creating art as a machine through a new medium, using analog photography. The photos from the project were all printed in the darkroom at U of M, but now I’m planning to assemble them into a handmade book.

Lately my weekend routine consists of running errands on Saturdays, doing household chores on Sundays, cross-stitching, Netflixing, and taking in the beautiful sun rays in my apartment.

Vermont Studio Center - Artist Residency

My 1-Month residency at the Vermont Studio Center feels like a dream that I wish I had never woken up from! A soon as I had arrived, I knew that I was going to be part of something spectacular. The creative energy was abundant and buzzing amongst the 55+ artists and writers, as soon as we stepped foot onto the “campus”. We all fed off of this positive vibe and took it as a motivator to be productive in our own unique ways.

Most of my time in Vermont was spent in my studio, located in Church Studios. The building was newly renovated due to a recent fire. I was extremely happy with my studio space and the beautiful natural light that came with the tall church windows. I immediately went to work and was determined to be productive. What would’ve taken me 2 months to complete back at home (during the spare hours of weekday evenings and weekends), only took me 2 weeks while at the residency. I’m thrilled with the amount of progress I made on this new body of work and I only wish I could’ve stayed at the residency longer!

On Day 1, I started off by unpacking my paint squares from my Paint by Numbers series. The patterns were pre-planned as I had picked all the squares a couple days before my departure. By doing this I only brought the supplies that were necessary to make the projects I planned to work on during the residency.

After I finished unpacking, I started off by cross-stitching the first translation,Translation #1, from the Translation Series.

I was thrilled at how quickly I was able to get Translation #1 - Cross-Stitch finished. I figured out that I could get 1/4 complete in a day, which meant that I could complete a cross-stitch this size in 4 days if I put in 6-6.5 hours per day (something I could never do while at home). Before I started the next cross-stitch, I started working on the the first stitched painting, Pattern A.

Once I finished sewing Pattern A, I completed Translation #2 - Paint By Numbers and brought out the iron to get things that were done looking crisp and flat. After these were ironed and scanned, I started prepping the cross-stitch pattern for Translation #2 and planned out the embroidery floss colours.

As I continued to cross-stitch, I was starting to realize that I had not packed enough blue and green embroidery floss. I knew I had to buy more, but there wasn’t anywhere in Johnson, VT that sold embroidery floss. An employee from the residency suggested that I post something on the local neighbourhood forum. Within 1-day I was able to source a local resident who was willing to donate a beautiful stash of embroidery floss from her personal collection. She insisted that I take as much as I like, although I still had to restrain myself from taking too much. Afterwards it had started to rain and she kindly gave me a ride back into the main part of town (I had walked 20 min on the way there). I definitely hit the jackpot with this one and I’ll never forget this women’s generous offering!

At the end of the first week, I signed up for the Resident Presentations and gave a Pecha Kucha style artist talk (20 slides, 20 seconds each, 7 minutes total). Each week artists and writers shared their work both past and present. It was truly inspirational and insightful to hear everyone talk about their processes and ideas/concepts behind the work they create.

During the second week, I worked hard on completing Translation #2 - Cross-Stitch and Pattern B. As I was working on these simultaneously, I also began to think about the next stage of the Translation Series and went to the local art store to buy some supplies. I purchased 2 yards of raw canvas and acrylic gouache paint, which I’d been meaning to get around to trying! I usually only ever paint with acrylic paint and the occasional water colour.

After cutting up the raw canvas, I stapled a few pieces to the walls of my studio and primed them with gesso. Then I began testing out how I was going to paint by measuring and taping out, as precisely as possible, each square. Once I was comfortable with how the test was going, I moved onto preparing the canvas by measuring and numbering each column and row, which took a lot of concentration and patience. Finally I was ready to paint! During each “round” there were 64 squares exposed at a time, which I calculated to take me an average of 45 mins.

After taping off the canvas, 64 1/2 inch squares were exposed at one time. To the left of the canvas is the cross-stitch pattern I followed to do the painting.

On Thursday, we had our first evening of Open Studios which was an amazing night of walking around to all the studios and seeing the hard work that everyone had created so far. See below for a slideshow of photos from the night.

My Studio

On the weekend, I was feeling a little burnt out from all my hard work and walking around from Open Studios. My friend Lauren and I went for a walk to explore our natural surroundings and take photos (slideshow below). Then in the evening we stayed in, ate junk food, and watched a movie.

The following week, I started to rotate between three different stations in my studio: 1. Sewing Paint Squares, 2. Cross-Stitching, 3. Painting Squares.

I also volunteered to have my saliva swabbed at Lauren’s pop up clinic in her studio. Click here to learn more about her Plasticization Clinic. Lauren and I also decided to go for another walk and we finally found “Journey’s End”, a trail that lead to a small waterfall. See slideshow below for photos taken during our nature walk and some other photos of Johnson, VT.

As the residency was starting to come to a close, I worked hard to finish the three works I had in progress. My goal was to finish the cross-stitch, the hand-stitched painting and the small test paintings all in time for the last Open Studio.

Lauren had to leave a couple days early to get back to NY for a class she was teaching, so we decided to revisit a restaurant in a nearby town called Stowe, for some delicious pizza from “Pie-casso” as a little farewell dinner.

The last couple of days I spent wrapping up my projects and working on submissions for various exhibitions and publications.

The last day of the residency was spent packing and cleaning up the studio, as well as saying goodbye to the space, Johnson, and the wonderful people I met along the way. I hope to return to the Vermont Studio Center someday and I’ll definitely be looking to do other residencies in the near future!

Solo Exhibition: I Come From a Long Line of Machines

Last month was my solo exhibition, I Come From a Long Line of Machines, at the Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison, BC. Below are some behind the scenes photos from the installation day. It’s always a physical task to unravel and layout The Machine: Knitting Ouroboros. I never really know how the work will fit a space, even with the right preparation. But I couldn’t be happier with how it all came together in the end. I’ve also included a few photos from the Opening Reception.

This exhibition was the largest showing of my work to date. I will continue to expand upon this body of work and I hope to continue showing in solo and group exhibitions across the country. Below are photos of all the works in the show, including title, year, medium, and dimensions.

This past month I re-visited and completed Glitch Series 04. See below for behind the scenes photos, as well as the finished works, which will be framed at 11x14 inches.

Vancouver Art Book Fair

In October, I’ll be participating in the Vancouver Art Book Fair! Since I’m going to be in Vermont for all of September, I wanted to make sure I finished my zine for the fair ahead of time. Below is a sneak peak of my zine titled, Glitches, 5.5 inches x 8.5 inches.

WIP (Work in Progress)

Lately I’ve been spending time adding onto the project below, Timeline (tentative title). This project uses up odds and cut-off ends of embroidery floss that I’ve accumulated while working on other cross-stitch works. I’m finally making some slow and steady progress on this piece, which is going to be my largest cross-stitch to date once it’s complete!

Vermont Studio Center Residency

Only one month till I leave for my 1-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s been a very busy summer and I’m looking forward to having time to relax and really concentrate my efforts on my art practice. Not only will this mean more time to work on projects, but I’m also hoping to work on research and catch up on reading. During this residency, I also want to work on improving my writing/talking about my art. So far my plans for studio work during the residency are to expand on my Paint by Numbers Series by incorporating cross-stitch and potentially re-painting on a larger scale. I’m also interested in investigating alternative modes of installation/presentation. The possibilities are endless, which is why I’m thrilled to have the time and space to explore new ideas!

This past month I’ve been spending approximately 20-24 hours per week cross-stitching whenever possible. Why, you might ask? I was determined to finish Glitch Series 03. I’m happy to say that I did it! This series will be framed in 18x24” frames, each cross-stitch and glitch image is approx. 5.5 inches. I’m so happy to have another series under my belt, but I’m also looking forward to completing Glitch Series 04 which is currently in progress.

On May 30th, We Are Pie Artist Collective will be participating in the Spring 2019 Wine + Art Walk, in Downtown Abbotsford. Tickets have already sold out! The night consists of drinking wine and walking to the nearby stores which are showcasing the work of local artists. We Are Pie will be displaying our art at The Kindred Clothing Co.

This summer I have a solo exhibition, I Come From A Long Line of Machines, at the Kent Harrison Arts Council - Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison, BC. The exhibition will run from August 3-25, with an opening reception taking place on Sunday, August 4th from 2-4pm. The exhibition consists of my MFA thesis work as well as new works I’ve created since graduate school.

Artist Residency: Vermont Studio Center

After my solo exhibition in Harrsion, I’ll be taking off to the Vermont Studio Center for a 4-week residency, from September 1-27th. “The VSC is the largest international residency program in the US, hosting more than 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world”. The artist residency will provide the time and opportunity to deepen my practice and network with other artists. Established visiting artists will give public talks and attend open studio sessions. I will also have the chance to give an artist talk and share my practice further through a slide presentation.

This March and April I’ll be a vendor at the All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) Market on March 16th & April 13th. The markets takes place 11am-5pm at U.O.C. Hall 154 E 10th ave, Vancouver, BC. Later this week, I’ll be setting up shop at the Pacific Arts Market at 1448 West Broadway, for the next month. This new retail space is an art market featuring local artists, craftspeople, and designers to display their work for sale. On Saturday, February 9th, from 11-7pm, I’ll be there for most of the day for the event “For the Love of Art”. Art to Dine For

Just a reminder that I’ve got another art market fundraiser event coming up on February 8th, at High Street in Abbotsford. The market at Art to Dine For will feature art by art collective members from We Are Pie. It’s going to be an amazing event with art, food, and live music!

Women in Art

I’ve been accepted into a group exhibition at the Kariton Art Gallery in Abbotsford, for Women’s International month! I’ll be showing my three women artist portraits: Yayoi Kusama, Diane Arbus, and Judy Chicago.

The 2019 Women in Arts exhibition will be held from March 9th - April 2nd.

An opening reception will take place on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Solo Exhibition - Ranger Station Art Gallery

Some more exciting news! I’ve been accepted for a solo exhibition at the Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison, BC. More information to follow, but what I can tell you is that the exhibition will take place in August 2019 and will feature work from my thesis “I Come From a Long Line of Machines”.
